The traditional wedding is a long and colorful affair. Formerly it lasted three days, but in the 1980s it more commonly lasted a day and a half. Buddhist priests offer a short sermon and recite prayers of blessing. Parts of the ceremony involve ritual hair cutting, tying cotton threads soaked in holy water around the bride’s and groom’s wrists, and passing a candle around a circle of happily married and respected couples to bless the union. After the wedding, a banquet is held. Newlyweds traditionally move in with the wife’s parents and may live with them up to a year, until they can build a new house nearby.
Birth and Death Rituals
The birth of a child is a happy event for the family. According to traditional beliefs, however, confinement and childbirth expose the family, and especially the mother and the child to harm from the spirit world.
Death is not viewed with the great outpouring of grief common to Western society; it is viewed as the end of one life and as the beginning of another life that one hopes will be better. Buddhist Khmer usually are cremated, and their ashes are deposited in a stupa in the temple compound.

Russian rye bread is flavoursome and most often eaten without butter. Fish varieties include omul (similar to salmon and from Lake Baikal) and sturgeon, which is often poached and served with a sauce or mushrooms. The most famous Russian salad is called “Olivje” and is offered in many restaurants and bars. As for dessert, the Russians make excellent ice cream. If you are in St. Petersburg, you should not miss the opportunity to try the “pyshkie” – soviet style donuts. Tea with lemon is the traditional Russian beverage.

Summer in Moscow and St Petersburg is similar to that in northern Europe: hot but with frequent showers. Evenings can be cold even in July and August, so don’t forget a warm coverup and a jacket or umbrella. At midsummer in St Petersburg, there is no real darkness. Autumn is brief, and by the end of November winter sets in, bringing with it lots of snow and extremely low temperatures. Spring arrives with a vengeance, heralding the great thaw in late March and April. Pack very warm clothes if arriving in winter, as temperatures between end-November through end-February plummet to well below zero degrees Celsius.
Dress is casual but Russians do make quite an effort when they go out. It is inappropriate to wear clothing which is torn or has holes. In winter (November-March) a warm hat, gloves and a scarf are essential as well as a warm coat. It is advisable to wear removable layers as buildings are often very hot inside.

Yes, single supplement is applicable if you are traveling alone and covers your single room accommodation. Our tour prices are based on one person sharing a twin / double room and a price per person is less when sharing a room. If we have a single traveler booked on a tour willing to share accommodation, we would always offer other single travelers to share. However it is not guaranteed and not all customers would like to share their accommodation. Please note, single supplement applies to accommodation in hotels only. If you are traveling on a train and would like not share train compartment with strangers, additional charges will apply.
I have already made a booking, can I profit from a recently released special offer?
Please note all special offers are subject to their terms and conditions, which are always specified in the offer description. Normally special offers cannot be applied retrospectively and are relevant for new bookings only. Our special offers are dependent on the discounts given to us by our suppliers: air companies, hoteliers, museums, etc. who would like to promote their services based on their own marketing strategy, occupancy, etc. Unfortunately, those suppliers cannot honour any discounts for existing bookings and as a result we have to pass the same conditions to our customers. However we do not want to discriminate our existing customers who did not profit from any special offers, and we will offer them (where possible) complimentary hotel upgrades and discounted prices for optional services.
We always recommend to book our tours as early as possible as you are likely to get an early booking discount and more importantly enjoy a much better flight options for your chosen destination. Many tours (especially popular cruises) do fill up quickly and you may not get a desired cabin, hotel category if you postpone your booking to the last minute.

Tipping is quite common at all destinations where we operate our tours. Please find below some guidance.
- Restaurants – although you normally will not find any service charge in your restaurant bill, many visitors do leave tips to show appreciation for a job well done and this is certainly acceptable. Such gestures are voluntary and at the sole discretion of the visitor.
- Excursions – tipping a guide is completely at your discretion. If you really liked the service and guide’s knowledge we recommend EUR5 per person per day. Please note, this figure is just a guidance, the final amount is entirely up to you.

Sri Lanka is quite a safe destination to travel and one of the most picturesque countries on earth. The country is at peace and we are experiencing record a record number of visitors; as Sri Lanka is considered one of the few ‘un-spoilt’ destinations in Asia . Our tours are conducted in areas which are considered safe for tourists to visit. Many of our clients have become friends and cannot wait to return to their ‘second home’, feeling safe and secure in our care.. Please visit our news page for latest updates.
What safety precautions must I take when travelling?
According to accepted norms of travel you should deposit your valuables like money, passport, tickets, jewels etc in the hotel safe deposit locker. In accordance with international custom the Hotels in Sri Lanka are not responsible for objects lost in the room. You should also not leave your valuables unattended on the beach, the balconies or terraces.
Never leave your money or passport in your backpack or suitcase. Always keep a record of your Travellers Cheque numbers separately from the Travellers Cheques. It is wise to keep an amount of money (about US$ 200) stashed away separately from your money-belt or pouch.
What health issues must I be concerned with?
Sri Lanka has an effective health care system which is considered a model for most developing countries across the world. However, emergency medical facilities may not be found outside main cities. You may have to be brought to Colombo for treatment. We recommend you use the private sector hospitals, which are likely to offer better care.
It is mandatory for those travelling to Sri Lanka from Africa or Latin America to have a valid certificate of vaccination for Yellow fever and Meningitis prior to arrival in Sri Lanka. You need up-to-date Hepatitis A, Polio and Tetanus shots.
Mosquito borne diseases like dengue, chckengunya and malaria are common. It’s advised you take adequate protection against mosquitos. Take some Imodium tablets (just in case you get an upset stomach).
Almost every town has a pharmacy selling common medicines. However, we advise you to carry any special medication as the availability of medical supplies may vary. You are strongly advised you take an adequate health insurance cover when travelling to Sri Lanka.
How about mosquitoes and other pests?
Most hotels will provide you with a plug-in mosquito repellent which will usually be switched on during turn down. You can buy the mats (small repellent tablet inserted to the plug-in unit), from most local supermarkets. Mosquito nets in hotels are a rarity. You can also buy the burning coils or citronella candles from the supermarket. It would be advisable to apply some repellent lotion if you plan to have dinner in an outdoor/ alfresco setting. The locally available ‘Siddhalepa balm’ is quite effective to take the itch out of mosquito bites.
Leeches – A good remedy is to apply soap and left to dry or apply lime to exposed areas. You can wear leech socks. Which are pulled over the trousers to prevent leeches reaching the exposed skin of the legs.
If you find a leech sucking on your leg, do not pull it off, but wait for it to fall off after feeding. Else you can apply some salt; this will make the leech release its hold and fall off.
Food & Lodging
What food will I find?
Sri Lankan dishes are based on rice, with a large variety of vegetables, fish & fruits. The uniqueness of Sri Lankan food influenced by invaders and traders – Indians, Arabs, Malays, Moors, Portuguese, Dutch and English all whom have left a mark on the Sri Lankan diet, will surely make your trip a voyage of culinary discovery!
Sri Lankan food is good, perhaps a little too piquant for foreign palates, but worth trying. The Lankan food served in your hotel is toned down a little bit due to the sensitive stomach of most tourists, but nevertheless is delicious and you should try it. International food of any kind is found in all major Sri Lankan Restaurants.
Most coastal towns have excellent seafood including prawns & delicious crab. Rates are quite inexpensive. Being a tropical country, Sri Lanka is blessed with a large variety of fruits. Some fruits like mangoes and Bananas (known an plantains here), come in over a dozen of sub varieties of shapes, sizes & tastes! Fruits such as Rambutan, Pineapple, Mangosteen, Papaya (Papaw), wood apple, melons, passion fruit, guavas, etc., are but a small sample of the amazing variety of fruits to be discovered and enjoyed.
Can I obtain vegetarian food?
Most large hotels and restaurants have a ‘vegetarian section’ in the menu. The smaller local ‘rice and curry’ restaurants may say the food is vegetarian but include a serving of fried fish or sprats (anchovies). The ‘South Indian’ vegetarian restaurants are 100% vegetarian.
Can I obtain ‘Halal’ food?
‘Halal’ food is quite scarce in major hotels. The Galadari and Holiday Inn in Colombo serve halal food, as well a couple of hotels on the west coast. There are quite a few restaurants in Colombo and Kandy, but not much else. The best bet is to order seafood instead of meat to be on the safe side.
What sort of food can I expect in an ‘Ayurveda Resort’?
The food is exclusively based on Sri Lankan rice and curry menu. The curries are mostly Sri Lankan vegetables; Chicken and fish maybe included.
How about drinks?
Sri Lanka is famous for it’s tea, and pride ourselves in producing ‘Ceylon Tea’, the finest tea in the world. There is a local version of coffee, which is a bit strong. But Colombo is the only place that you could get a really good espresso. Highly recommended are the fresh fruit juices. Popular international soft drinks are available even in little village boutiques.
Sri Lanka has it’s own variety of local beer. Sri Lanka also has two extremely popular local varieties of intoxicating beverage – Toddy and Arrack. Toddy is a natural drink, produced from one or other palm trees. Fermented and refined toddy becomes Arrack. Some varieties are real “rocket fuel”! Imported beer and foreign liquors cost almost the same as in most western countries.
Thambili or King Coconut is a sweet, clean and cheap natural drink that you’ll find by the wayside. It’s extremely cooling and refreshing!
We advice not to drink tap water unless it is purified. Bottled water is recommended. Only use water from containers with serrated seal- not tops or corks. Most hotel rooms have boiled water in thermos flasks, which is safe to drink.

Sleeping huts & tents are simple & often lack Western-style toilets or bathing facilities. In such places, tour participants will be provided with the best available facilities. The package price may include meals as specified in each tour program.
Money & Banking
What currency is used in Sri Lanka?
The Sri Lankan currency is the Rupee (Rs), divided in to 100 cents. Notes come in denominations of 20, 50, 100, 500, 1000 & 5000. Breakdown larger notes when you change money – it can sometimes be a problem to breakdown a larger Rs 5,000 note.
Hotels and other tourist establishments will quote you the price in US$ or Euro and collect in Rupees at the prevailing exchange rate.
Is Rupee the only currency used, or is the US$/ Euro also widely used?
The Sri Lankan Rupee is used only for transactions within Sri Lanka.
US$/ Euro etc., is accepted in most large hotels, and tourist establishments, but not in outlets catering to locals. Advice to bring in US$/ Euro and change as and when needed.
If the Rupee only is used – what is the best currency to bring – US$ / £ Sterling / Euro?
It depends on your primary account currency.
If your account is in Singapore Dollars, bring that (or you’ll lose on converting to a third currency).
You can change the currency to Rupees on arrival at the airport. However, if your currency is a non-freely convertible local currency (not freely traded in international foreign exchange markets) it’s better to bring a freely convertible currency like the US$/ Euro. There are many currency exchange counters at the arrival lounge (after passing baggage clearance and customs).
Internationally accepted currencies and credit cards are easily accepted at most tourist establishments. Travelers cheques are also recommended. We recommend you change some of your money into local currency for tipping, shopping and other miscellaneous expenses.
The exchange of foreign currency is only permitted at banks, money changes and Hotels. You’ll have no problem changing Travelers Cheques at any major bank. Thomas Cook and Visa are the most widely accepted. Banks charge a 0.5% handling fee and generally a commission, which varies from bank to bank. Change only that amount of money you require for spending.
How much of money can I bring in to/ take out of the country?
There is no restriction in bringing money in foreign currencies into Sri Lanka. This sum could be in TCs, Bank drafts or currency notes. However, if the total exceeds US$ 15,000, that sum must be declared to the Sri Lanka Customs.
If you wish to take out from Sri Lanka a sum in excess of US$ 5000 in currency notes (out of the money brought in), you must declare the entirety of the sum brought in, even if it is less than US$ 15,000.
The foreign currency amounts indicated in US$ may be in equivalent amounts in other convertible foreign currencies.
Please retain whatever receipts of exchange (including ATM receipts) for monies declared. This will be helpful when re-exchanging to foreign currency and taking your money back out of the country. The Re-Exchange (purchase of foreign currency) can only take place on your departure at the Bank counters at the airport. Do note that they will only accept bank receipts (not Money Changer receipts).
Are credit cards widely accepted?
Credit Cards are widely used and accepted by local establishments (even in small towns). The most widely used card types are Visa and MasterCard, with Amex to a lesser extent. It would be a convenient option to use your Credit Card (valid for international use) whenever possible.
Due to currency regulations in Sri Lanka, credit card charges cannot be made in foreign currency Local tourist establishments (including Dream Vacations) will apply the daily exchange rate on the day of your payment and convert foreign exchange rate to Sri Lankan Rupees. Please use the exchange rate indicated in the currency converter only as a guideline as we will apply the prevailing bank exchange rate at time of transaction.
Are ATM machines widely available and do they issue cash against my debit/ credit card?
ATM’s are available in most main cities. You can take cash against Visa / Mastercard in most ATM’S. However, as different banks accept different cards, we advice you ensure that your card is valid for use in Sri Lanka by contacting your bank. Watch out for the Maestro or Cirrus logo!

When should I go to Azerbaijan?
Thanks to Azerbaijan’s location between the Caucasus Mountains and the Caspian Sea, this tiny country has almost every climate zone in the world.
Indeed, to see Azerbaijan at its absolute best, plan your visit in spring (April-July) or autumn (September-November). Spring comes to life with wildflowers and green pastures, while fall sees typically mild weather and autumn colors. You’ll also avoid the influx of travelers in July and August, the country’s peak tourist season.
June-September, however, is the ideal season for a trip to the cool Caucasus Mountains or a vacation along the Caspian Sea coast. It’s the driest, sunniest time of year. Baku and the central region are hot and humid, but the occasional windy day can lower the temps and leave you in want of a jacket.
Late October and November tend to see more precipitation and unpredictable weather – November can see lovely autumn temperatures or snowfall, just depending on the year.
Winter is ideal for avid skiers, but expect cold weather and regular rain or snowfall. The exception is the Caspian Sea coast, which has more temperate weather than the rest of Azerbaijan. Unless you’re comfortable with winter conditions, though, plan your visit from end of March-October.
One perk of visiting in December, however, is traveling to Sheki to see the traditional equestrian sports competitions, only held at this time of year.
In summer, consider visiting The Gabala Music Festival, a 10-day classical music jubilee held each year at the end of July or beginning of August in Gabala, Azerbaijan.
Navruz (Persian New Year), an Azerbaijan holiday celebrated on March 21, is the most significant holiday in Azerbaijan, prepared for and anticipated weeks in advance. Tourists who plan their trip around this holiday will not be disappointed, as this festival of color, life and tradition is the perfect way to welcome the coming of spring.
What is the best time to visit Baku?
Baku, Azerbaijan is very humid and frequently sees winds that blow through unexpectedly, earning it the nickname ‘The Windy City’. The ideal time to visit the capital and many of the cultural sites around it is in spring or autumn.
March-April are the windiest months, but you’ll avoid the crowds this time of year and enjoy the warming weather and a city in bloom. May to July is hot and humid, but you won’t have to worry about rainy days. Can you travel to Azerbaijan by land?
Azerbaijan is bordered by Iran, Russia, Armenia and Georgia. The Nakchivan Autonomous Republic also borders Turkey. While the border with Armenia is closed, it’s possible to enter Azerbaijan from any of the other countries.
There are three borders with Iran and Georgia, two with Russia and one with Turkey (via Nakhchivan). The borders with Russia and Turkey are open 24 hours, as are most crossings with Iran and Georgia. The exceptions are the Astara crossing with Iran and the Sadikhli/Vakhtangisi crossing with Georgia, open from 9:00-17:00 and during daylight hours, respectively.
To travel to or from Armenia, you’ll need to first pass through Georgia.
There’s also a night train running between Baku and Tbilisi every day that takes approximately 12 hours. Tickets cost 25-35 USD for a sleeper car; departure and arrival times given are only estimations.
Ferries from Aktau, Kazakhstan and Turkmenbashi, Turkmenistan also run on an erratically frequent basis. Ferries generally depart every 1-2 days and the trip can take anywhere from 24 hours to a couple of days, depending on the weather, cargo situation and availability of docking space at port. Ferry rides cost approximately $80 on the low end and $160 on the high end, depending on the route, ship and type of ticket you purchase. All the ships can accommodate bikes and vehicles.
Is Azerbaijan safe for tourists?
Azerbaijan is a country of hospitable, patient people and tourists are rarely victims of crime. On the contrary, most are genuinely impressed by the kindness of the local people.
Traffic laws are not as widely observed as in other nations. Exercise caution when crossing the street and don’t hesitate to demand safe driving practices from your taxi driver if he becomes reckless. Avoid night travel outside of the city when possible, as not all stretches of road are well-maintained.
If asked by police officers to pay a fine, do not pay unless there is an official reason to do so. Some tourists have been duped by individuals posing as police officers, and a few officers themselves may unlawfully ask for bribes.
Avoid breaching the topic of the Nagorno-Karabakh disputed territory with Azerbaijanis or of speaking negatively about their leaders or politics. This is less a matter of safety than of showing respect for cultural sensitivities while in country.
Unlike in Armenia and Georgia, it’s advised not to drink the tap water. You can easily purchase bottled water or bring a bottle with a built-in filter with you.
Is Baku safe?
Baku, the capital and largest city, has a vibrancy even at night, and in nice weather whole families often stroll the streets well after dark. The high presence of policemen on the streets is a major deterrent to many would-be criminals.
Pickpocketing is not unheard of, particularly in Baku. You can minimize this threat by taking the usual precautions of keeping your valuables in a safe place, being discreet when handling large amounts of cash in public and not storing all of your money and credit cards in one place while wandering about.
Scams in the form of overpriced souvenirs, meals and taxi rides are not uncommon; double-check prices before making any significant purchases or ordering food, and try to get an idea of taxi fares before agreeing to a price. Better yet, order a taxi through Uber or similar local apps.
There are no restrictions that prevent women from going to bars or being out late at night, but this is not common practice for most Azerbaijani women, and these activities could result in misunderstanding your intentions or bring unwanted attention.
Is Azerbaijan solo travel safe?
Solo travelers to Azerbaijan should rest assured that most Azerbaijanis are welcoming and friendly towards guests in their country. It’s customary for local men to give up their seats for women on public transport, and those who know English are often eager to practice by helping you in any way that they can.
That being said, due to the higher prevalence of scams in the country, the language barriers and the difficulty in traveling outside of Baku, solo travel to Azerbaijan does have its challenges.
Observe common-sense precautions and when possible avoid walking alone at night, particularly in areas with large concentrations of bars or in poorly lit areas.
As with most countries in the region, the most common inconvenience faced by many lone travelers is communication, as most of the population outside of the cities only speak Azeri. Transportation issues can also cause a headache, since the country is still in the process of improving its roads and public transportation.
Thoroughly researching routes and itineraries beforehand can allow for smoother travels. For solo travelers wanting to meet up with other kindred spirits, consider joining a day tour, staying in hostels with a communal vibe and traveling during the high seasons.
Do they speak English in Azerbaijan?
Azerbaijani, also known as Azeri, is the official language in Azerbaijan. It’s spoken as a first language by more than 80% of the population and by more than 30 million people worldwide.
It’s a Turkic language closely related to Turkish, Crimean Tatar and Turkmen, although traces of Russian and Arabic are also embedded in the language. There are two dialects: North Azerbaijani, spoken in Azerbaijan and Central Asia, and South Azerbaijani, spoken by Azeris in Iran, Iraq and Turkey.
In Azerbaijan, the Latin script is the official writing system, but you’ll still see Cyrillic in wide use due to Azerbaijan’s close historical ties with Russia.
Russian is the second language of at least half the population, but outside of the cities Azerbaijani is likely the only language you’ll hear spoken. Other minority languages include Armenian (spoken only in Nagorno-Karabakh), Lezgian, Georgian, Talysh and Avar. A handful of endangered minority languages are also spoken by isolated populations in the Caucasus mountains.
English may well overcome Russian in future years as the primary second language of Azerbaijan. For now, it’s spoken by many people in the tourist industry and by some of the younger population in Baku. Outside of the capital, however, it may be difficult to find English speakers.
What’s the cuisine like in Azerbaijan?
Azerbaijanis are naturally hospitable people, and the scrumptious local cuisine is a central aspect of many of their celebrations and gatherings. Some of Azerbaijan’s most popular and well-loved dishes include:
Plov –Azerbaijan’s variations of this Central Asian dish are distinct and delicious. They add specific spices such as cinnamon and saffron, and a combination of meats, vegetables and fruits. One of the most popular varieties is shah plov, cooked inside a layer of thin crusty bread that is then peeled away to reveal a mountain of plov inside.
Shashlik – Seasoned kebabs of meat or vegetables, they’re often eaten with garnish and thin lavash bread.
Kufta bozbash – A national dish of Azerbaijan, this healthy soup consists of seasoned meatballs, potatoes, chickpeas and saffron.
Dushbara – small boiled dumplings stuffed with meat or vegetables and served in a broth.
Dolma – pepper or grape leaves stuffed with spiced minced meat and rice
Shekerbura – A soft pastry stuffed with a sweet nut pastry, it’s a popular snack and dessert.
Vegetarians can also enjoy popular local dishes cooked without meat:
Dovga – Soup-like yoghurt made with chickpeas and rice and eaten either hot or cold.
Dushbara – vegetarian varieties of dushbara include garlic and tomato fillings.
Qutab – thin, fried crepes stuffed with spinach or cheese and eaten with yogurt sauce. Meat varieties are also available.
Shirin plov – a pilaf dish made with dried fruits instead of meat.
Several varieties of cheese, including smoked cheeses and white cheese, are widely available, as are ample salads and produce in every season except winter.
The most popular drinks include endless cups of black tea and a cold, sweetened fruit drink known as sherbet.
Can you drink alcohol in Azerbaijan?
Azerbaijan is a secular Islamic nation – much of the local population drinks alcohol, and it can be purchased in most restaurants and shops. It’s inexpensive, sold even during Ramadan and may legally be consumed in public. Wine, beer and vodka are the most popular local choices.
Is Azerbaijan an Islamic country?
The vast majority of Azerbaijan’s population is Shi’a Muslim, with minority Sunni Muslim and Christian populations. The government is officially secular and in reality, many Azerbaijani people also live a secular lifestyle. Alcohol consumption is widely accepted, Islamic dress code is rarely observed, and few people attend mosque outside of religious holidays.
In addition to Islamic architecture, cathedrals and monasteries may also be toured in Azerbaijan.
What should I wear in Azerbaijan?
There is no enforced dress code in Azerbaijan and tourists may wear what they wish. Among the local population, however, men are rarely seen wearing shorts or sleeveless shirts and women usually avoid wearing shorts or skirts above the knee, tight-fitting or revealing clothing and sleeveless tops. Dress is more conservative outside the cities and tourist areas.
Since Azerbaijan’s weather varies greatly between the coastal areas, mountains and Baku, you’ll want to have clothing suitable for a variety of temperatures regardless of the time of year you’ll be visiting. It’s advised to pack a raincoat and a warm sweater or jacket even in summer, and comfortable walking shoes are a must year-round.
Women will want a headscarf for visiting religious sites or while traveling in very conservative areas.
Frequently asked questions about Tanzania and our tours to Tanzania.
Click here for FAQs specific to the Mt. Kilimanjaro trek.
- How do I apply for a visa to Tanzania?
A.Here’s a handy linkwhere you can find those details. You will need a passport that is valid at least six months beyond your dates of travel and three unused pages in your passport. - Will bottled water be readily available?
A.Yes, as there are very few water sources in the national parks, it will be carried in the jeeps during the safari . However, we provide our tour participants reusable water bottle. - Do you suggest we bring gifts for our local guides/drivers?
A.While small mementos from your hometown are always appreciated, a small cash gratuity would be even more appreciated. ☺ (Note that tips for guides and drivers are included in this tour so anything you provide is above and beyond.) - Can we bring candy for the kids?
A.No, that is not recommended. If you’d like to interact with kids, perhaps you could carry some bubbles or small rubber balls to play with and leave behind. - What should I pack for the safari?
A.We encourage you to pack as light as possible and will send you a packing list shortly after you’ve registered for this trip. In general, you’ll want light cotton or linen clothes that are not brightly colored (consider, beige, khaki, brown). Wear short-sleeved shirts, light pants, long shorts or capris. - Will I need hiking boots for the safari?
A. Hiking bootsare not necessary but for those concerned about ankle support, they will come in handy. Make sure that whatever you bring, they’re broken in before you arrive.
Sandals – Because we’ll be traveling a lot by car, and because there will be a lot of dust and dirt, bring a pair of sandals like Chaco, KEENs or Tevas so you can easily wash them (and your feet) once back at the hotel/lodge. Consider wearing them with socks otherwise your feet might get bitten by bugs.
Old tennis shoes – This is another good alternative. You can leave these behind after the safari and the locals will appreciate it. Bottom line is wear comfortable walking shoes.
- You’ve mentioned that it will be dusty. Are there any ways we can protect against the dust?
A. As mentioned above, bring a pair of sandals that can easily be washed. It’s also a good idea to bring a scarf or buff to tie over your face when needed. But most importantly…dust can be extremely damaging to camera equipment. Many photographers carry their camera in a pillowcase when driving. If your camera doesn’t have a super-long lens you could probably get away with wrapping it in a buff. - Should I bring a swimsuit?
A. Some of the hotels will have pools, so bringing a swimsuit is a good idea. - What should I pack for the Mt. Kilimanjaro trek?
A.We will also send you a packing list for this portion of the tour as well. In general, you’ll want appropriate hiking gear and warm clothes as it will likely be freezing at night. - I’m thinking of adding a side-trip to Zanzibar on to my safari. Is this possible?
A.Absolutely! This is the perfect opportunity to see more of Africa. - Do I need to be concerned about my luggage weighing too much?
A. Airlines for in-country and intercontinental flights will weigh checked bags and you’ll be charged for overages. If you have additional flights scheduled, please check with the airline for details. - Will hotels have a laundry service so that I can pack light?
A.Hotels will have laundry service but you would be wise to bring quick-drying clothes that you can wash in your room (carry a rubber sink stopperfor this). There have been problems with people getting their clothes returned in time for departure even at hotels where we have a two-night stay. - Are there locks on our hotel doors?
A.The following accommodations will have room doors which lock: African Tulip, Kitela Lodge, Rhino Lodge, Rhotia Valley and Tarangire River Camp. - For the tents that don’t have locks, how do I know my things will be safe?
A.We encourage you to bring luggage locks so that you can lock up your valuables. Don’t leave valuables such as cell-phones, iPads etc. lying around.
Camps are in remote locations deep in the bush and staff are highly trusted because being found guilty of theft would result in them losing their job. It’s not like thieves can walk away from the camp with ease. If you do leave anything behind in your room, leave it locked up in your luggage.
- Is it safe to leave my passport, cash or camera in my room while I’m out?
A.We highly recommend that you carry your passport, cash, credit cards and cameras with you at all times. Consider buying a pouch for around your neck or under your clothingto hold these items. - Is it safe for a single woman to stay in a room/tent?
A.Our tour operator, a woman, has lived in Africa for 15 years and has never heard of any single woman being approached inappropriately while on safari. - Do camp guards carry guns?
A.The guards do not carry guns but are well-trained to watch for and fend off animals at night and no one should be out roaming around on their own in the dark. You must wait in your tent to be walked back and forth after dark. In the daylight, if there are animals in camp —like an elephant—and you see it, it is best to remain in your room until someone comes for you. (Enjoy having an elephant in camp!) - Do I need to learn any of the local language?
A.Ki-Swahili is the main language spoken in Tanzania although many Tanzanians speak English (especially those in the tourism industry). It’s highly unlikely you’ll need to know any Ki-Swahili but it’s always nice to learn at least a few phrases. Being able to say “hello,” “goodbye,” “thank you” and “excuse me” will go a long way. Lonely Planet has an excellent phrase bookthat will get you started. - Can I use my cell phone in Tanzania?
A.If you have an unlocked phone (one that is not tied into a contract) you can purchase a local sim card and add talk time. This is the least expensive way to do it. If your mobile service offers it, you may also add an international data plan to your phone (before you leave home) in order to get email through the cell service. The other option is to use Wi-Fi (when available) and make calls using WiFi. - Are ATMs available?
A.ATMs are available in Arusha only. This will be your best bet for getting cash in Tanzanian shillings. But please note that ATMs are notorious for running out of cash or not working at all. Your best bet is to bring cash in U.S. dollars and exchange them for the local currency once in-country. - Will I get a better rate for larger bills?
A.Yes! $50 and $100 US will get a better exchange rate than small bills. Also note that bills older than 2003 will not be accepted. - Can I change my US dollars at the lodges or only in Arusha?
A.It’s not guaranteed that you can change your US dollars into the local currency at the lodges but dollars are accepted as payment for extras and bar tabs. For local currency, your best bet is to change in Arusha. - Do hotels and vendors take credit cards?
A.A couple of hotels will accept cards but there may be additional charges added to your purchases. You’ll be hard pressed to find a vendor/shop that will accept cards. Plan to use cash. - Are travelers checks accepted in Tanzania?
A.They are but it’s a laborious and frustrating process to cash them. You must have the original receipts from your bank (which most people don’t travel with) as well as a copy of your passport. Plan to use cash. - If I bring U.S. dollars, are the Tanzanians fussy about them being perfect?
A.Absolutely. Bills must be the newer “big head” bills meaning the more recently released ones with the president’s head being large. Your bills cannot have any ink marks, staple holes, tears, punctures, etc. - Are short skirts (slightly above the knee) acceptable? How about calf-length skirts? Just pants?
A.Tanzania is a conservative country with a large Islamic population. Even among the Bantu tribes, women are expected to wear their kangas (sarongs) to their ankles and cover legs and buttocks – the African erogenous zones. (Breasts are ok, as they are just mammary glands! But we don’t recommend this for our groups. ☺) While you can wear shorts on safari, it’s advised that long shorts (just above the knee) are best. These are OK in Arusha as well. Sleeveless shirts on safari are OK but not the best option. - Would you recommend taking a raincoat?
A.The short rains end in January but you never know, there may be a few showers in January/February. We suggest you bring a raincoat that is lightweight and doesn’t take up too much room. A wind breaker/light raincoat can be used on early morning game drives before the sun rises. - I have been researching new luggage and took to heart your message of going LIGHT. Is it safe to assume we are going to be responsible for moving our luggage around every day, and also that we may be needing to pick it up more than wheel it, due to fairly uneven and unpaved terrain?
A. Pack as little as possiblein terms of clothes and bring only one carry-on if you can manage. Though there will be people at the hotels to help with bags, the lighter you can travel, the happier you’ll be! It’s best to have soft-sided luggage as these fit better in the vehicles.
You’ll have very little interaction with your luggage other than moving it from the van to your room and usually there’s hotel staff to help with that. You might consider a small roller bag that is carry-on size (under 22″).
Please note that there won’t be a lot of room for luggage in the safari vehicles. Therefore, we encourage you to pack as light as possible so to avoid luggage being placed on the roof of the vehicle–this is not ideal for game viewing.
- What tricks do you use to fit all that stuff into a carry-on? And still have room somewhere for souvenirs?
- It’s true that if you pack light, you’ll have to do more laundry. But I’d rather live with rinsing out some clothes every four or five nights than lugging around a big bag. Check out this article on secrets to packing light. I sometimes purchase a bag at my destination in which to carry souvenirs.
- How strict are the airlines in regard to luggage weight?
A. Airlines for in-country flights will weigh your checked luggage and you will be charged for overages. - Will I be able to purchase toiletries and medical supplies along the way?
A. No, bring all you the medical supplies and toiletries that you’ll need as it is unlikely you’ll be able to replenish these along the way. - I wear contact lenses. Will that be an issue on this trip?
A. It will be very dusty. If you wear contact lenses, you might consider bringing prescription glasses instead and carrying an extra pair in case one set gets broken. - What will the weather be like?
A.It is very difficult these days predicting the start and stop of the rainy seasons. January – April is the hottest season in Tanzania although the really hot temps are found in Dar es Salaam and Zanzibar.
Expect the temperature during the day to be in the 80’s and mostly dry (although we might get rain). Mornings will be cooler, especially in the Ngorongoro Highlands (Karatu and Ngorongoro Crater) so you’ll want a jacket and long pants.
